British Sign Language

Our Language of the Month is British Sign Language (BSL). We were really lucky to have visitor Elisa Murtagh, a BSL student from the University of Central Lancashire, come to teach us some signs. She told us the story of The Three Little Pigs. We learnt the signs for ‘pig’, ‘blow’ ‘hair’ and ‘chin’. See if you can guess which sign is which!

We also learnt a bit about the deaf community, many of which use BSL in order to communicate. At John Bramston we understand that there are lots of different languages used within our school, our local community and across the country.

Article 23 Children who have any kind of disability should have special care and support, so that they can lead full and independent lives.

Article 30 Children have a right to learn and use the language and customs of their families, whether these are shared by the majority of people in the country or not.
